Daytime Emmys - Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress - My Top 5
By Carolyn LeVine Topol
I never (at least rarely) shy away from a challenge. The task at hand — select my top five choices among all the acting nominees for the 2016 Daytime Emmys. I was completely overwhelmed by this daunting decision, so I offered a compromise. Despite the quality performances by all the nominated actors, I will put myself out on a limb, and narrow the list down to my top five in the combined categories of Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress.

Since I am not privy to the actual submission, I am basing my selections on the stars’ 2015 performances.

Without further delay, here are my top five in no particular order:

Mary Beth Evans
Mary Beth Evans (Kayla Brady/Days of our Lives) - While I was not immune to cheering for the long-awaited reunion of Kayla Brady and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols), I was far more deeply moved by the reunion of Kayla with her brother, Bo (Peter Reckell). The thrill of seeing Bo alive was beautiful, as was the ease with which the pair fell into their roles as loving siblings. However, what put Mary Beth in a top spot, was the depth of emotion she believably displayed when Dr. Kayla Brady diagnosed, and then delivered the news of Bo’s fatal condition to her beloved brother. The scenes between Kayla and Bo significantly diminished my tissue supply — not something easily accomplished in daytime TV.

Justin Hartley
Justin Hartley (Adam Newman/The Young and the Restless) - I was at the front of the line, experiencing extreme skepticism regarding the recast of Adam Newman — that is, until I watched Justin Hartley take ownership of the role. Justin found a way to, not only demonstrate Adam’s ruthless, revenge-driven character, but to temper it with just the right amount of vulnerability. It was far easier than expected to wish Adam success as he fought to regain all he lost due to his near death experience. Justin portrays Adam’s ongoing struggle for balance between his personal life and desire to gain recognition from his father seamlessly. It’s a never ending walk on the precipice for Adam Newman. Thanks to the nuanced, and moving, portrayal by Justin Hartley, the viewer can not possibly predict which way Adam Newman will fall.

Finola Hughes
Finola Hughes (Anna Devane/General Hospital) - There appears to be only one actress on daytime TV today who can take her character from hardened adventurer to tenderest of grandmothers. Finola Hughes is that woman. Finola's portrayal of Anna Devane demonstrates the complicated life this character has, does, and will continue to lead. I felt the depth of Anna’s pain as she said goodbye to her beloved Duke (Ian Buchanan) and cheered as Anna took her uncharacteristic revenge against the man who murdered him. Finola Hughes portrays the multilayered character Anna, with all her flaws, passions, determination, and warmth perfectly.

Christian LeBlanc
Christian LeBlanc (Michael Baldwin/The Young and the Restless) - Over the years, Christian LeBlanc has taken Michael Baldwin from the darkest criminal places to levels of hurt, betrayal, heroism, and loyalty throughout the years but I felt his recent cancer storyline brought him to an entirely new, and challenging place. Unlike many typical cancer stories, Michael doesn’t strive for renewed health and recovery. Instead, when a seemingly innocent doctor’s visit, spurred on by the need for a libido-booster, reveals there may be more to Michael’s condition than can be rectified by popping a Viagra, Michael finds every excuse to avoid learning the truth. Once diagnosed with cancer, the newly self-deprecating, insecure character, attempts to keep his condition a secret. Christian portrays Michael’s choice to push his wife into the arms of another man, rather than face the challenge of battling cancer head on, believably. This could easily have come off as a melodramatic, over-indulgent storyline, but Christian LeBlanc opens the door for viewers to feel, and empathize with, Michael’s inner turmoil as he faces his options in the frightening, dark tunnel of cancer.

Tracey E. Bregman
Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren Fenmore/The Young and the Restless) - This leads to my final selection. As Michael’s uninformed and confused wife, Lauren Fenmore, Tracey Bregman plausibly demonstrates Lauren’s uncertainty and dismay concerning her husband, Michael’s apathetic and unfamiliar behavior toward her. Misinterpreting her husband’s ongoing rejections, Lauren finds herself being pushed toward the brink of infidelity in an uncomfortable and awkward series of scenarios in which she can not conceive of her husband’s motivation. In addition, we feel Lauren’s pain upon learning Michael has been keeping his cancer diagnosis from her, choosing death and/or divorce rather than facing the possibility of a life of complete dependence. A story that could have become indulgent and overplayed was handled with just the right balance of uncertainty, anger, fear, and ultimately love.

Not one to give up easily, there will be a follow-up piece revealing my top five selections in the categories of Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress.  Stay Tuned!

Matt Cohen May Have Ended Up on 'The Bold and the Beautiful' or 'The Young and the Restless'

Matt Cohen
In the March 28, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest, Matt Cohen (Griffin, GH) reveals he may have ended up on The Bold and the Beautiful or The Young and the Restless.

Cohen reveals, "I tested for Bold and Beautiful and Young and Restless about a year ago. They ended up not going forward with one of the roles, and the other role went to somebody who was already established in the soap world. It obviously worked out how it was supposed to, because I feel like GH is the best place for me."

Cohen is sensational as Dr. Griffin Monro, but I can't help but wonder which roles he tested for on YR and B&B. Maybe if we ask nicely, he will tell us!

Guy Wilson Isn't Returning to 'Days of our Lives' at This Time

Guy Wilson
Serial Scoop has received a deluge of emails asking when we plan to announce that Guy Wilson is returning to Days of our Lives. Below is a sample of these emails:

Is Guy Wilson's return announcement getting closer or is it before the Olympics?

Did you hear about Guy Wilson returning to Days. I have actually been hearing about it for a while now but I wasn't so sure. I'm sure that he's returning now. When will someone announce it.

I have been hearing that Guy Wilson is returning to Days of our lives near the same time Freddie Smith returns onscreen. I had already heard things about a possible return for him instead of Chandler Massey for awhile now but now more people are saying he is returning. There has also been hints from actors that work on the show. I guess I wanted to know when were you guys going to announce his return.

I have been hearing rumors about Guy Wilson returning to Days. Dont know if it's true or not but there has been a couple of hints for the last two months. Its been rumored that Chandler Massey is returning but I think it's Guy instead. I think Deimos has Will somewhere but that's because VI [Vincent Irizarry] and GW followed each other out of the blue before the 5 week break. Also VJ [Vivian Jovanni] followed Guy too. Plus we know how good GW is at keeping secrets. I think that's why Freddie Smith returned. They filmed a WilSon reunion. Also, an inside source has me believing Will returns to Days around summer and that it's GW Will.

It's getting closer to Guy Wilson's return announcement. I wonder if he's gonna announce it this week or later on.

Give a blind item about Guy Wilson's return to days. Also include how Will is returning from the dead.

Guy Wilson returns to days. Will returns from the dead!!!

I reached out to a DAYS spokesperson and was told that Guy Wilson isn't returning to Days of our Lives at this time. While Guy Wilson is not, currently, working on any daytime dramas, he is preparing to head to South Africa in the next few months, as a new indie film he co-wrote will be heading into production.

Best to Guy, and the entire cast and crew, on this new project.

Kyle Lowder
In a first of its kind deal, Ken Corday, long-time Executive Producer in Daytime Television, has enlisted Emmy nominated Michael Caruso, to adapt and produce his original novel, Ladies of the Lake, for the digital platform.

The series will be Executive Produced by Michael Caruso (under his company Michael and Barbara Caruso Productions) and Emmy nominated actor Kyle Lowder, who also stars in the series and was instrumental in spearheading the initial concept to bring the soapy page-turner to the small screen.

Two-time Emmy winner Sonia Blangiardo will direct the series.

Ladies of the Lake tells the story of four wealthy wives living in the exclusive gated community of Avalon. When their abusive husbands begin to turn up dead, Detective Shawn Daniels (Lowder) launches an investigation, only to discover the many secrets hidden beneath the glossy veneers of Avalon.

The script was penned by award winning writer Michael Caruso, adapted from the novel written by Ken Corday.

“Ken has been behind us since day one, giving us the freedom and creative control to adapt his novel. He has been incredibly generous throughout the entire process and working alongside Kyle on this has been extraordinary. We are pulling out all the stops to whip up a really fun ride for the audience” said Caruso.

Kyle Lowder said “Bringing Ken Corday's novel to life is something that I wanted to do from the first time I read it. To have the opportunity to work with Michael Caruso and all the talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera, is truly inspiring.”

Corday added “When Kyle and Michael unveiled their vision for transforming Ladies of the Lake into digital episodes, I was delighted. Our creative collaboration is a burst of fresh energy which stays true to the original story and also introduces these beautiful, intelligent, complex women to a broader audience."

Ladies of the Lake begins production next month. Additional cast announcements will be made next week. Visit www.ladiesofthelakeseries.com and follow @LOTLSERIES1 on Twitter.

Daytime Emmys - Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress - My Top 5
By Carolyn LeVine Topol

Approaching the challenge to select my top five choices for Outstanding Supporting Actor and/or Actress was equally as daunting as the task of selecting five from the Outstanding Actor & Actress categories. However, this task was multiplied in difficulty as, having watched all four network TV soaps during the past year, I felt some actors were glaringly snubbed in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories. While it is hard to block out a performers entire body of work, and keep focused solely on the submission reels, I can only assume this is what occurred during this year’s nominee selection process.

Although I would have liked to have seen more actors and actresses nominated, each of the nominees had exciting and dramatic storylines during 2015. Since I have not been privileged to see the reels sent in by each actor, I am basing my selections on overall storylines and performances from 2015.

Without further delay, here are my selections in no particular order:

Linsey Godfrey: (Steven Bergman)
Linsey Godfrey (Caroline Spencer/Bold and the Beautiful) - Linsey’s actions and reactions from the moment Caroline confirmed she was pregnant to the moment she learned her husband, Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye), had a vasectomy were priceless. We watched her go from pure joy to abject horror and were drawn into every step of Caroline’s emotional quagmire. Linsey demonstrated Caroline’s inner turmoil perfectly. We felt Caroline’s pain as she hesitantly agreed to keep the truth of her child’s paternity from his biological father, Thomas (Pierson Fodé).

Bryton James (John Paschal/JPI)
Bryton James (Devon Hamilton/Young and the Restless) - Devon Hamilton’s guilt, as he fell deeper and deeper in love with his father, Neil’s wife, Hilary (Kristoff St. John and Mishael Morgan), was palpable. Once the truth came out, Devon’s raw emotions bubbled over as he watched Neil spiral into an abyss of anger and liquor, reacting to his son’s betrayal. But the crowning jewel for this selection was watching in stages as Devon panicked, allowing his fear to build when his new bride seemingly disappeared during their honeymoon. Bryton’s emotional range is evident and viewers were easily drawn in by his need to support all those he loves, despite knowing he is responsible for the apparent destruction of his family.

Jacob Young/Getty
Jacob Young (Rick Forrester/Bold and the Beautiful) - Jacob Young spent much of 2015 portraying Rick Forrester’s roller coaster of a storyline. Rick took the viewers on his frightening journey of vengeance as he morphed into the angry, ruthless CEO of Forrester Creations — a result of his extreme reaction to his wife’s betrayal. However, rather than remain a one-note, evil character, Rick was able to find his way back to humanity when his love, Maya Avant (Karla Mosley), was revealed to be transgender. Rather than running the other way out of a sense of fear or ignorance, Rick got down on one knee and proposed. This dramatic arc was carried off seamlessly by Jacob Young, redeeming Rick in the eyes of Bold fans.

Melissa Reeves (Getty Images/Jason Kempin)
Melissa Reeves (Jennifer Horton/Days of our Lives) - I felt that the outstanding talent of Melissa Reeves was considerably underutilized during much of 2015. It was a thrill to see her step it up— in a big way — upon discovering the regrettable affair between her son, JJ, and her long-time arch enemy, Eve Donovan (Casey Moss and Kassie DePaiva). Horrified by her discovery, Jennifer, literally, threw herself into a physical altercation with Eve — a scene worthy of multiple views. I hope this scene was included in Melissa’s submission reel. In addition, we were afforded the opportunity to watch sweet Jennifer Horton use her knowledge of the affair to blackmail Eve. Seeing this side of Jennifer play out believably was a pleasure. As a fan, it was great fun watching Jennifer gain the upper hand in the long-standing battle between her and Eve.

Dominic Zamprogna
Dominic Zamprogna (Dante Falconeri/General Hospital) - Dante is normally the grounded, good-intentioned do-gooder in Port Charles. However, during 2015, viewers saw him take a turn toward the dark side. Dominic portrayed Dante’s initial attraction to newcomer in town, Valerie Spencer (Brytni Sarpy), with just the right amount of subtlety. Yet, when given the opportunity to jump to inaccurate conclusions regarding his wife, Lulu’s (Emme Rylan) suspected extracurricular activities, Dante let his imagination get the better of him. With parents, Olivia Falconeri and Sonny Corinthos (Lisa Locicero and Maurice Benard), it’s no wonder Dante would take a turn toward the dramatic at some point. Dominic took Dante from picture-perfect cop, to a much darker side of his character — and it worked.

Who are your top 5 choices?  Would love to hear your thoughts.

Don't Miss Sebastian La Cause in 'The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada'

Sebastian La Cause is nominated for an Indie Series Award for the fourth year in a row.  He's currently starring on stage in "The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada."
“Gird Your Loins!” The Boss from Hell is back as Rockwell Table & Stage presents "The Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada," running through the end of April.  While you’re out getting the boss’s coffee and dry cleaning and get your tickets on sale now.

Hot on the heels of its wildly successful Unauthorized Musical Parodies of Scream, Cruel Intentions, Clueless and Home Alone, Rockwell weaves in its signature brand of campiness and musical zaniness to the hit 2006 movie about the boss everyone loves to hate.   Kelley Jakle and Lana McKissack alternately portray Andy, the fresh-faced assistant who must endure her employer’s wrath in the fast paced world of high fashion.   This all-new, live parody production was co-adapted by Ray Wetmore and directed by Tye Blue.

In addition to its seam-splitting hijinks and hilarious musical score, Rockwell pushes things over the top once again. Actors Drew Droege (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) and John Flynn (Upright Citizen’s Brigade) alternately play the maniacal role of Miranda Priestly, the devilishly demanding and narcissistic editor-in-chief of fashion bible Runway Magazine.

“Everyone can relate to how crazy it can be to work for the boss from hell,” said Executive Producer and Co-Adapter Kate Pazakis.  “Our Unauthorized Musical Parody of The Devil Wears Prada dials the craziness up a notch, leaving you laughing down the catwalk.

Rounding out the cast is multiple Indie Series Award winner Sebastian La Cause (Orange Is The New Black, Homeland) as Christian Thompson, the charming and sexy writer that seduces Andy during Paris Fashion Week.

"This is what LA theater is all about for me, these small unique experiences that surround the audience and immerse them in a fun world," La Cause revealed to Serial Scoop. "I'm having a blast doing this show and working with such talented people. Don't miss it!"

La Cause only appears in the Friday and Saturday shows. If you're in Los Angeles next week for the 7th Annual Indie Series Awards, this would be a great event to add to your calendar.

Tickets are on sale now for Thursday-Saturday night shows and Sunday brunch matinees through late April. Rockwell: Table & Stage is located in Los Feliz at 1714 N. Vermont Ave, Los Angeles.

Who shot Jelena?
Fans won’t have to wait long for the payoff to Hit The Floor’s jaw-dropping season three finale. VH1 announced today a special one hour episode premiering this Summer. The special will deliver all the excitement, drama and passion that Ahsha & Derek are beloved for and will also explore the huge finale cliffhanger: Who shot Jelena?

The season three finale surprised fans in classic Hit The Floor fashion with a touching, center-court proposal from Derek Roman to Ahsha Hayes in the middle of a Devil Girl’s dance routine in Devils Arena. She said YES! Now it’s time for the planning to begin. Viewers will see the preparation, challenges and, of course, dancing that only aHit The Floor wedding could deliver.

Just when we thought love reigned on “Hit The Floor,” Jelena pulled the ‘dance floor’ from under us and got control of the Los Angeles Devils. That didn’t go over well with everyone in the arena. In the concluding, heart-pounding moments of the finale, Jelena was shot – and there is no shortage of suspects.

Zero and Jude are also left with a life-changing decision that will alter their relationship forever. Viewers will see it all play out in this sizzling Summer special.

Series regulars for season three included: Dean Cain, Kimberly Elise, Taylour Paige, Logan Browning, Valery Ortiz, Katherine Bailess, Jonathan McDaniel, McKinley Freeman, Rob Riley, Adam Senn, Brent Antonello, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe and Don Stark.

Hit The Floor averaged 1.3 million total viewers Live+SD for season three premiere episodes. On average, Hit the Floor ranked as the #2 non-sports cable program in the 10PM time period with W18-34 and W18-49.

Hit The Floor was a social media hit all season, trending as the #1 topic on Twitter during its season finale airing. Over 63k Fans watched on Facebook Live as the cast reacted to seeing the shocking finale for the first time.
