Wounded Eagle Flying: The Joseph Breen Story

Joseph Breen
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, actor Joe Breen became a familiar face on daytime soap operas with starring roles as Paul Slavinsky on Loving, Will Jeffries in Guiding Light and Scott Eldridge on As the World Turns.

In 1993 he was fired from As the World Turns after the news surfaced in the National Enquirer that he was HIV-positive.

Breen is now working on telling his story in the film Wounded Eagle Flying. He introduces the project with the following:

My name is Joseph Breen, and I was born in Westchester, NY in 1958. I'm an actor and a singer, a father and a husband, a brother and a son, and a man living with AIDS.

Before my diagnosis I had much success working in television in NYC, including starring roles in three different daytime soap operas, and also singing and acting in the theater world. Then my story took a dramatic turn when I became infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. My life, my entire world, changed forever.

Thirty years on, I'm asking and reflecting on how I got from there to here, how I can make sense of the lost years. Mine is a story of survival which I'd like to share so that others can take heart and know that even wounded eagles can learn to fly again.

On this site you'll find a short video which will put you on the inside of my journey of survival -- from diagnosis to learning how to paraglide off the Alps. Yes, paraglide off the Alps! And a proposal of what the full-length documentary, when complete, will reveal not only about my journey with this illness, first hand, but also my journey back to gratitude.

My intention is to 'fly high' above my fears and illusions about illness, about life and about death, and to share my story with others.

Lindsay Hartley
Fans of the daytime dramas All My Children, Days of our Lives, and Passions, will not want to miss Dying to be Loved, starring Lindsay Hartley. The thriller will premiere on Saturday, April 16 at 8pm ET/PT on Lifetime. Also starring are Dan Payne (All Yours), Paloma Kwiatkowski (Bates Motel) and Jedidiah Goodacre (Tomorrowland).

Hartley plays Jill Yates, a successful lawyer, engaged to Connor (Payne), a self-made business man. They are busy planning their wedding. Jill’s daughter, Emily, 18, (Kwiatkowski) is a freshman in college. Extremely introverted and suffering from bouts of depression, Jill is thrilled when Emily asks if she can invite a young man to dinner.

The thrill is gone, however, when she and Connor meet Gary, 25, (Goodacre), an obnoxious and self-involved young man with a temper. Emily can see no wrong and Connor suggests Jill not criticize Gary as it will only draw Emily closer to him.

But Gary proves to be more dangerous than anyone thought when he is involved in a road rage incident while out with Emily and he ends up killing a man. Emily is also charged with the crime because she handled the gun – even though she was trying to keep Gary from using it.

Gary is convicted of manslaughter but released into the custody of his brother, a policeman, before going to prison. He convinces Emily to run away with him. She leaves a note for her mother saying life is not worth living if they can’t be together.

When a video camera appears to show the two jumping to their deaths in a “double suicide,” Jill is devastated and guilty. However, she believes Gary killed her daughter and faked his own death. She uses all her resources to discover the truth – her daughter is indeed alive. Now both mother and daughter must find a way to save themselves.

Dying to be Loved is executive produced by Tom Berry, David DeCrane and Gilles LaPlante. Producers are Nicole Reid and Costas Vassos. The film was written by Stephen Lyons. Director is Paul Shapiro.

Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Days of our lives has put out a casting call Dr. Valerie Grant. She is described as a gorgeous African-American woman in her mid-50s.

The casting notice reads: "Courage and perseverance are two character traits that people admire her for the most. And while her experiences might have hardened other people and made them cynical, Valerie has grown into a wise and compassionate person – who still occasionally gets tripped up by her own mistakes."

The show is seeking experienced actors for the recurring role, which will begin taping in mid-to-late May.

The role of Valerie has been played by three actresses: Tina Andrews (1975-1977), Rose Fonseca (1977-1978), and Diane Sommerfield (1981-1982).

Flashback: Did Racism End the Romance of Valerie and David on 'Days of our Lives'

Valerie and David
Valerie Grant and David Banning were daytime TV's, and Days of our lives' first interracial couple. Were the couple broken up because of real-life racism?

Below is an excerpt from a May 31, 1977 Washington Post article by by William K. Knoedelseder:

The latest from NBC's Days of our Lives is that the chaste, year-long engagement of David Banning and Valerie Grant, daytime’s only interracial couple, is kaput. According to the script, the reason for the rift is David’s infidelity. But according to the actors, the reason is real-life racism.

"They're breaking us up because the storyline is unpopular,” said actor Richard Guthrie (David). "The studio has been getting a lot of hate mail from people threatening to stop watching the show."

"When they get enough of those letters, they respond," said actress Tina Andrews (Valerie). "One letter said: 'I hope you’re not going to let that ****** marry that white boy.' Apparently, they are not. I’m being canned."

Andrews pointed out that her television parents, Ketty Lester and Lawrence Cook, already have been written out of the script. With both the black storyline and the interracial romance ended, she said, Valerie is expendable.

Spokesmen for NBC in Burbank and the show’s co-executive producer, Wes Kenney, confirmed the couple's imminent breakup but denied the split was a reaction to unfavorable mail. Kenney said that although mail is read, analyzed, studied for trends in viewer response and discussed with the show’s writers, public reaction has not affected the long-term plans for the romance.

"This breakup has been planned from the very beginning. There has been change of direction."

Kenney said that while Days Nielsen ratings have fallen in the last year, from its perennial position in the top 3 to a current number 7 in a field of 14, the mail reflects a 50/50 split on the subject of David and Valerie.

Both Guthrie and Andrews said the mail was overwhelmingly negative and kissing quickly disappeared from the script.
“After that, we weren’t even allowed to touch,” said Guthrie. "Whenever we inadvertently worked it in, we were told to stop from the control booth. It was ridiculous."

Andrews said: "They would always say 'Richard, don’t touch her,' never the other way around. Pretty soon we started getting scripts with stage directions like 'They look at each other warmly, but they do not touch,' underlined five times so we wouldn’t miss it. That offended me as an actress, as a woman, and as a black person."

Kenney admits the physical aspects of the relationship had been played down in the past, but said the couple had again been allowed to kiss in more recent episodes. Referring to the “no touching” remonstratives, he said if he had seen such directions in the script, he would have taken them out. As co-executive producer, Kenney often edits the scripts before they are given to the actors.

Former head writer Pat Falken Smith, the creator of the interracial romance, disagreed with the young actors’ assessment of the situation. The kissing and touching was played down as a matter of storytelling. “In daytime programming, the drama is much stronger when you don't show intimate love scenes. If Richard and Tina thought it was unrealistic that a young engaged couple didn't kiss, that's tough. It was my story and gratuitous kissing was not part of it. And no actor re-writes me on the set, ever."

'Days of our Lives''FLASHBACK: Tina Andrews "There Goes My Job"

Days of our Lives has put out a casting call for the role of Valerie Grant. Tina Andrews created the role in 1975, and was written out of the soap in 1977. Was racism the cause for her ouster?

Below is an excerpt from a June 20, 1977 People Magazine article by Lois Armstrong.

There are people who would like to believe that with the sensational telecasting of Roots racism disappeared from America (or got stuck away someplace like, say, in the craw of Andrew Young). That is not quite the case. As it happened, in the same month that Roots premiered, the first interracial couple in the 25 years of daytime soap opera were planning a bridal shower on NBC's Days of Our Lives. Last week, just four days before the scheduled wedding, it was abruptly canceled. The black fiancée, "Valerie Grant," was scripted away from the fictional mid-America town of "Salem" to D.C. (she got a scholarship to Howard U. med school) and possibly off the series for good.

Tina Andrews, the seasoned 23-year-old actress cast as Valerie, accepted her fate philosophically, saying, "The day the script came in with him saying, 'I love you and want to marry you,' I told myself, 'There goes my job.'
