Flashback: The Real Reason Staci Greason Left Her Role of Isabella on 'Days of our Lives'

Staci Greason with Drake Hogestyn
In the July 28, 1992 issue of Soap Opera Weekly, Staci Greason spoke to the magazine about her reasons for departing her popular role of Isabella Black. You can read the full article below.

Staci Greason has officially announced that she's leaving Days of our Lives, effective October 31, after three years on the show. (Her last airdate will be around the middle of November.)

"I've been faced with the decision [to re-sign or resign] for a long time," Greason says. "Before Christmas DAYS asked me to stay on for two years." Although the actress had never intended to remain with the soap past her original agreement, she did weigh her options carefully.

"I was really hesitant about leaving for financial reasons," she admits. The turning point was when "I started seeing myself turning into someone that I didn't want to be," Greason explains. "I was getting too tired and too cranky. Also, as an artist, there's always that fear of getting too comfortable. And DAYS has become too comfortable. It's like high school," she continues. "Now, it's time to graduate, but not in a bad sense. I've learned from this experience."

Greason recalls some wonderful times on DAYS. "I've had so much fun with Drake Hogestyn (John). We laugh so much. And I'll never forget the time Isabella got stuck in an elevator with Johnny Corelli (played by Antony Alda). I never laughed so hard in my whole life. I also enjoyed working with a couple of the directors, especially Bill Ludel."

Greason blushes before confiding her most memorable outtake to Soap Opera Weekly. "Isabella was meeting Roman, when Drake was still Roman, at a cabin," she says. "She comes out of the bathroom in a towel. I was supposed to fall into his arms and drop the towel; I had on a body stocking. But as I threw up my arms-- because I have no breasts-- my body stocking also fell to my waist. There I was standing topless in front of everyone."

Fans, who have heard rumors of Greason's probable departure from DAYS, have been writing her for weeks. "I've been getting a lot of mail. Many people are very upset," she says. "They've said things like, 'We've supported you all this time. How could you do this to us?' I find that kind of strange. I feel I've worked really hard these last three years. I've given it my best through numerous producers and head writers. It's time to go give my best somewhere else, whether it's acting, writing, directing -- whatever's out there next. That's the great part about life."

Greason's first post-Isabella venture will be a six-week holiday in Europe with her roommate. "I've never been there, and that's what I want to do-- take time off and travel," she says. "We'll start in Paris and work our way down. Then we're going to Italy."

When she returns, Greason plans to start auditioning. "I had gotten to the point where I thought I didn't like acting anymore," she notes. "Then, when I was in New York for the Daytime Emmys, I went to see The Secret Garden, I felt like I was 10 years old again. I realized I still love acting, it just has to be in a different form."

Whatever her next project may be, she has to play Izzy B's last days in Salem, because DAYS won't be recasting the part. "The other day I told (DAYS co-executive producer) Tom Langan, 'If you recast, I hope the girl's just terrible and Drake hates working with her,'" laughs Greason. "I was just kidding. I realize DAYS has to do what's best for the show."

A dramatic exit is planned for Isabella. "I'm very excited about that," Greason says. "If it's written well, it will be a really good story....a real story. It's not a story about lockets or chains or faraway mystical places or cruises. It's a real story about what happens between two people."

Sharon Case on Her 'Y&R' Character Sharon: "She Doesn't Feel Responsible for What Happened to Sage."

Sharon Case
This week on The Young and the Restless, Sharon struggles to keep the secret that Nick (Joshua Morrow) and his late wife Sage (Kelly Sullivan) are the biological parents of her son Sully. If she doesn't reveal the truth, is she doing it to save herself?

"It's about whose lives are going to change and maybe not for the better," Case tells Soap Opera Digest. "Sharon worries that the loss of a child would be devastating for Dylan. She knows from personal experience how awful it is. Faith would be going though it, too, because she thinks of Sully as Sharon and Dylan's child, so it would be hard for her to believe otherwise. Sharon is also thinking about Sully, because she is the only mother he knows. It would be very jarring for him to be taken away from her. Sharon is thinking about all of these complications, as well as the fallout, and she thinks that it's better to just stay quiet for now and leave things the way they are."

Case says Sharon doesn't believe she is responsible for Sage's death. "Sage had figured out that Sully is her son on her own and she was determined to go and tell Nick," Case points out. "Sharon didn't send her away. Sage knew the truth and she drove to Sharon's house to tell her, then decided to get in her car and drive to Nick so she could tell him. At this point, it wasn't because of a secret Sharon was keeping; Sharon was trying to find out the truth too, so she doesn't feel responsible for what happened to Sage. Sharon truly feels that she and everyone else in this are all victims."

Sharon is aware of the heartbreak Nick is going through, and she wants to do what she can to help him. "She wants him to still be around his son," Case explains. "If Nick can't actually raise his son, Sharon knows that it's important that he at least watch Sully grow up. Every time he learns a new word or has a new tooth, she doesn't want Nick to miss out on any of those milestones. Sharon's not sure if being around Sully will help Nick feel better, or make him remember his loss; she's just trying to figure that out."

How do you think this is going to turn out for Sharon? Should she tell the truth, or is it better for her to leave things the way they are? Will Sharon and Nick reunite? Will Dylan's heart be broken?  How will Adam (Justin Hartley) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) factor into this story? So many questions!

Flashback: Tristan Rogers On a Possible 'General Hospital' Return "NOT EVEN AT GUNPOINT"

Tristan Rogers
In the August 18, 1992 issue of Soap Opera Weekly, it was reported that Tristan Rogers didn't have any desire to return to General Hospital. You can read the full article below.

NOT EVEN AT GUNPOINT"-- that was Tristan Rogers' response to a fan asking whether the Australian actor would ever return to General Hospital.

Rogers was a guest at John Reilly's (Sean) seventh annual fan-club champagne brunch at the Beverly Ramada in Beverly Hills, Calif., July 25.

"I don't miss the show that much, OK?-- so that gives you an idea. Let's put that one to rest right now," he said, after Reilly asked him for an update on his life since he left GH last March.

"I went back to school for a while at UCLA. I took several technical courses having to do with cinematography, television, stuff like that. Since then, I've been directing music videos, which I find quite satisfying at the moment. I haven't given up acting. But at the moment it's a nice diversion. I'm planning to start up a production company before the end of the year, and I will probably have a production off the ground by next March."

"I said when I left the show I really was fed up-- '91 was a horrible year for me," he continued. "If they set out to get rid of me, they couldn't have organized it better than the way they structured it. When I gave my notice, I had no intentions of changing my mind about staying, and I left."

"The tie is difficult to break because 11 years is 11 years. I'd put a lot of myself into that show. I'm sorry to see what it's become, because there's nobody there that knows how to run it. There's nobody who knows how to write it, nobody who knows how to structure it....The show's in the toilet-- and it's going to stay there until ABC hires somebody who understands soaps. There are only three people in this country who understand soaps-- and none of them work on GH."

'General Hospital' Star Matt Cohen: "I Want to Live a Huge, Full Life- Filled With Cakes, Hugs, and Smiles!"

Matt Cohen
In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, Matt Cohen spoke about his new role of Dr. Griffin Monro on General Hospital. The popular actor is thrilled and grateful to be on the daytime soap.

"I'm a guy that never thought I was going to be successful at anything; I always thought my life would be a struggle," he says. "So for me to wake up and have the opportunity to work almost daily at a job that I love, with a group of people that I already consider family, where I can kiss my baby and wife before I leave for work and come home and go to sleep with them at night-- honestly, I couldn't be happier. The actors that I work with on General Hospital are among the best actors that I've worked with on any show I've ever been on, and I feel absolutely privileged to work in that type of atmosphere."

Cohen shares many of his scenes with Finola Hughes (Anna), and she has nothing but praise for him. "He's the best!" she enthuses. "He's willing to work hard and he also has a great sense of humor about the whole thing. He has everything I could ask for in someone to work opposite."

Cohen says of Hughes. "Every piece of dialogue I share with her is a gift I was given by the acting universe. To be in the same room with her delightful, immensely lovely presence is one of the best feelings I've felt in this business. She's phenomenal. That woman is a prize."

He feels that he hit the lottery with Griffin. "I looked at Finola recently and said, 'Man, I am so lucky with this character.' The writers have given me a spinal cord, and they've hooked me into the history of a well-developed show, and a very loved man [Griffin's father, the late, lamented Duke]. I'm just super-excited to see where it's all going to go. More scenes with Anna, with Maxie, with Sonny-- whatever it is, it's going to be great! I'm so grateful to Frank [Valentini, executive producer] and my family at ABC for bringing me here. I'm so thankful, I'll wash all their cars for them!"

Cohen radiates positivity, and this last quote says it all about the charming actor. "My dream is to make it to three digits. I eat healthy, I take vitamins, I exercise, I do what I need to do. I want to live a huge, full life-- filled with cakes, hugs, and smiles!"

Deidre Hall
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that actress Deidre Hall will be honored with the 2,581st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 19, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. PDT. The star in the category of Television will be dedicated at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Eastown.
The Event will be live-streamed exclusively on www.walkoffame.com

Helping Emcee of the Hollywood Walk of Fame and President/CEO of the Hollywood Chamber Leron Gubler to unveil the star, will be Susan Seaforth Hayes. “Soap opera fans are going to be thrilled that their favorite star will be honored on the Walk of Fame,” said Gubler. “Deidre’s long career on television is proof she is a huge fan favorite and we welcome her to Hollywood Boulevard.”

Hall has been adored by fans worldwide for generations. As one of the most recognized and filmed faces throughout her career, Hall holds the distinction of appearing on screen more than any performer in television history. Cherished by millions worldwide as the beautiful Dr. Marlena Evans, Hall has been a driving force in the success of NBC’s longest running scripted daytime drama, Days of Our Lives.
Hall’s talent extends into other creative areas as well, such as Little Big Bear, the children’s book she wrote for a richly illustrated educational series by WriteBrain.com. As an advocate of healthy living and positive attitude, she co-wrote the informative, humorous cookbook, Deidre Hall’s Kitchen Close-Up, comprising nutrition tips for those suffering with heart disease, diabetes and obesity. In her latest book, How Does She Do It? A Beauty Book, Hall’s engaging wink-and-a-smile approach pokes fun at her career of being made up, dressed up and photographed from every angle.

Her desire to help others gave Hall the opportunity to be in the driver’s seat on television projects to promote awareness of special-needs children and women’s issues. For example, she holds the distinction of being the first actress to speak out about her fertility struggles and surrogate parenting, depicted in Never Say Never, The Deidre Hall Story, the movie she co-wrote and executive produced about this struggle. Hall’s straight-forward telling of her story helped open doors for women everywhere and initiated a national conversation about fertility. Hall also made television history when her identical twin stepped away from her own Special-Education duties to portray Marlena’s evil twin, Samantha and, several years later in a devious plot twist, the snaggle-toothed, curmudgeonly waitress tries to transform herself into a Marlena look-alike.

Among Hall’s more esoteric screen credits is a live performance with a five-ton pachyderm on television’s Circus of the Stars, which obliged Hall to practice with Elephant Joe, a key member of a traveling circus; as well as the role as a widowed mother of three, starring opposite Wilford Brimley in Lorimar’s Our House, a production frequently honored for its deep family values.

Hall has always believed in making time for community service. She donates all proceeds from her Days of Our Lives calendars and cookbooks to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and all proceeds from her watercolor greeting cards to Wounded Warriors. When her children entered school, Hall joined the school board to improve school lunches, and appealed to members of Congress to renew the Child Nutrition Act, which included her hosting a press conference at the White House. In 2009, Hall traveled with son David to Brazil as an ambassador for Operation Smile.

1997 Flashback: Nancy Lee Grahn Talks 'Santa Barbara', 'Melrose Place', and Getting a Contract on 'General Hospital'

Nancy Lee Grahn
Nancy Lee Grahn debuted in the role of Alexis Davis on General Hospital in 1996. In April 1997, Michael Logan spoke to the popular actress about the chances of General Hospital putting her on contract, and her then role of Denise on Melrose Place. You can read the complete interview below.

Michael Logan: So is it true General Hospital has finally offered you a contract?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Yes, we've been trying to work it out for a month now.

Michael Logan: So, like, what's the holdup?
Nancy Lee Grahn: These things take a long time. Plus, I've been distracted, what with Melrose, and I also have a bit of a love life now -- no, don't put that in.... Oh, never mind, I don't care. And I've been going out of town a lot. And there's a lot going on with GH, too, what with the launching of Port Charles. Contracts are a process. They always are.

Michael Logan: How can the writers be planning something for you if they don't know for certain that they have you?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Because we all know we're going to work this out, that's why. If I have anything to do with this -- and I do -- we will work this out.

Michael Logan: So does this mean they do have major plans for you?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I'm assuming so.

Michael Logan: You mean, you haven't asked?
Nancy Lee Grahn: No, I haven't. So far, faith has worked very well for me. I just believe that everything is going to be good. Things have always worked that way.

Michael Logan: Don't you think it's kind of weird that the public knows all about your noncontract situation? It's been written up in all the magazines. The fans are clamoring for you to get one -- in fact, they're writing to [executive producer] Wendy Riche demanding it. I constantly get asked about it online. This stuff never used to see print in the old days.
Nancy Lee Grahn: I find it so completely, totally odd. I feel two ways about it: On one hand, I feel that my privacy is being a little violated, but on the other hand I think, "Isn't it great to have all these agents out there?" And, quite frankly, they were more useful than my real agent.

Michael Logan: Do you think all this interest and concern had an influence on Wendy finally offering you one?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I believe that Wendy's objective is to please the fans. I truly believe that. But I also believe Wendy doesn't do something unless Wendy really wants to do it. So, yes and no.

Michael Logan: So now that you've shot all eight of your Melrose episodes, sum up the experience.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Well, I finally got the knack of working in film on the very last day I shot.

Michael Logan: But you've done tons of guest shots!
Nancy Lee Grahn: But you have to do them with consistency or you don't ever get comfortable. It's like that on a daytime soap, too: It took me six months to get comfortable on Santa Barbara -- and daytime is so much easier because it's in a controlled environment. Filmed shows like Melrose are totally different. You're trying to get into an emotional place, and they have to cut because there was a plane, they cut again because there's a helicopter, they cut again because a car drove by, we cut again because the camera missed the shot. It's all so technical.

Michael Logan: And you get such little screen time in return for all that. I mean, you've had like 2.5 scenes an episode! You actors have it so much better on daytime.
Nancy Lee Grahn: All along I've said that! Nobody's part on Melrose is that big. Doug Savant has very little to do and he's a regular, you know? It's a very big ensemble.

Michael Logan:Then why an eight-week run? Why not condense your scenes into a shorter, punchier story arc like they do on N.Y.P.D. Blue? Or will the answer to that be obvious as the episodes play out?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Yes, that will make sense. It all turns into a court battle. But I thought there would be more. It was a big deal to get the part. They saw a lot of people.

Michael Logan: Like who?
Nancy Lee Grahn: When I walked in for my audition I saw Elle MacPherson. I don't know who else.

Michael Logan: Do you know for a fact that you won't be back next season?
Nancy Lee Grahn: No, I don't know that. I was contracted for eight shows, which will take me through the season finale -- but they didn't kill me off. As Aaron Spelling has said, "If you haven't blown up on one of my shows, there's a chance you can come back." I think he said that in People.

Michael Logan: "Blown up"? How do you know that he wasn't referring to weight? You know, like the Hunter Tylo situation?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Very funny. All I know is that Denise leaves town. She doesn't die.

Michael Logan: Actresses seem to like themselves better on film. Do you find it more flattering than video?
Nancy Lee Grahn: No.

Michael Logan: I'm not surprised you think that. You look incredible on GH. Everybody does. To digress, I can't believe GH did not get an Emmy nomination for lighting.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Neither can I. They have the best lighting I've ever seen on a soap.

Michael Logan: So what's with the That Girl flip they gave you on Melrose?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Oh, you just sort of let them do what they're gonna do.

Michael Logan: Even when they want to make you look like Marlo Thomas?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I thought I looked more like Florence Henderson. But same era. By the last episode, I finally said, "Look, just blow it straight, will you?" And they did. I know what looks good on me, but I need to be more assertive.

Michael Logan: Doesn't that often get mistaken for bitchiness?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Yes, it does, but I don't really care -- it's my head up there on TV. The hairstylists on Melrose are really good, actually. I just don't know what that flippy s--- was. In film, especially when you're on location, there's usually so much going on, you have no idea what you look like. On video, there's always a monitor nearby. I can see what's going on.

Michael Logan: As many years as I've known you, I never remember to ask you this question: Did you secretly resent having to share your Emmy with Debbi Morgan? It was the only acting tie in Daytime Emmy history.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Not at all. She's fantastic. It was a very competitive year -- Jane Elliot, Arlene Sorkin, Robin Mattson, me and Debbi.

Michael Logan: By the way, why did you put yourself in the supporting category? You were not a supporting actress on SB. Did Marcy make you do it?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Why are Jackie Zeman and Vanessa Marcil in supporting this year? Because Genie Francis is the star of GH. On Santa Barbara, my feeling was that if my picture gets taken off the wall in order to put up a picture of Marcy [Walker] and A [Martinez] -- which is exactly what happened -- then they were the leads.

Michael Logan: Now this interview is gettin' good!
Nancy Lee Grahn: And I say what I say with great love for them. Lane and I were Beatrice and Benedict -- supporting characters! Those are always the most interesting parts anyway, even if they don't put our pictures on the wall.

Michael Logan:Speaking of Lane, it's no secret you two had your tiffs -- yet the on-camera chemistry was beyond compare. Talk to me about this. How can actors take backstage hell and turn it into onscreen heaven?
Nancy Lee Grahn: That didn't have a lot to do with Lane and me. Mason and Julia were so well developed and defined -- which had to do with everybody's contributions -- that the characters just functioned on their own. Lane and I knew how to act, so our differences didn't matter. The last eight months of Lane's run, he and I were not speaking. We would literally not speak to each other until we were on the set and they'd yell, "Five-four-three-two-one!" When he acted like a pissy little s--- (and you can write that because he did and [laughing] he'd probably say the same thing about me), I would use it because Mason, at times, was also a pissy little s---. You just find a way to use these things to your advantage.

Michael Logan:And Lane was doing the same?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Absolutely.

Michael Logan:OK, let's get to GH. Lots of flirty stuff happening with you and Wally Kurth -- is it safe to say they're going to put Alexis and Ned together?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I don't know. I also have pages and pages coming up with Tony Geary. When Patrick Mulcahey and Michelle Val Jean write those scenes they're just so much fun.

Michael Logan:Well, they're not gonna get into a romance with you and Tony. He's on the record as saying Luke can flirt, but he'll never have a romance with another woman. Even if they write it, he won't play it.
Nancy Lee Grahn: That's OK, too. Unconsummated sexual energy can be very interesting. There's so much more to play than romance when you have those negative and positive ions flinging back and forth. The thing I like about Luke and Alexis is that they are enemies, there's conflict already set up, they hate each other! That is always the best way to start a relationship. There is no drama without conflict.

Michael Logan: What about Wally?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I love Wally. I think he's adorable.

Michael Logan: But is he staying?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I don't know that he even knows.

Michael Logan: It's so easy to bitch and moan about the writing on GH lately, but I do feel sorry for anybody writing under circumstances where they don't know if they've got a star or not. So many actors on GH have kept things hanging. How the hell do you write for two different eventualities?
Nancy Lee Grahn: You just write it. Besides, Wally's contract isn't up until August. There's time to do something.

Michael Logan: Plus, they could always recast.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Oh, I don't know... people love Wally.

Michael Logan: Yeah, but he was himself a recast. Soaps can't keep crumbling under the weight of actor departures. Sometimes you have to keep the character going no matter what. Besides, if Ned goes, who else could they put you with romantically?
Nancy Lee Grahn: That's the problem. I don't know.

Michael Logan: How about the young ones -- A.J. or Jason? Or their daddy, Alan?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Hmmm....

Michael Logan: Does it interest or concern you that you're going to be given a teenage daughter on the show?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Yeah, it concerns me, quite frankly! [Laughing.] How can I possibly have a teenage daughter when I'm so young? No, really, I don't want to turn into a TV mom. I think being a mom in real life is great; being one on TV is problematic. I want to stay sassy and interesting.

Michael Logan: You've always appealed to a smart brand of soap fan, people who are desperate to see intelligent women on daytime. Why do you connect so strongly with the audience on this level?
Nancy Lee Grahn: They respond to me because I respond to that same kind of woman myself. When we watch TV, we want to see a representation of what we are, what we want to be. We want intelligent, successful, classy role models. When considering playing a character, I ask myself this question: If I had a daughter, would I want her to watch this character? Would she look at her and say, "She's cool"? And, most importantly, would she want to grow up and be like her? There are a lot of intelligent people watching daytime drama. The people that make the soaps talk down to the audience so much, they act as if they're just a bunch of yokels who have no life. Not only does it insult the people watching, it insults me because I used to be a big soap viewer. It insults my mother who still watches them. We are bright women. There are a lot of us out there who want someone onscreen they can relate to.

Michael Logan: Well, answer this: Why do we see so few examples of this kind of strong, smart woman on daytime, when the shows are run by women? There's a female president heading the daytime divisions at all three networks. The network programmers are virtually all women, as are at least half the executive producers and many of the head writers.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Well, aren't there a few bright women characters? You see so much more than I do.

Michael Logan:Well, yeah, but there are so many more who are victims and doormats. So many are women whose entire identity is wrapped up in the man they are obsessed with. Sure, there are exceptions: There's you, there's Hillary Smith as Nora -- the list is really pretty short. Just try finding one on Days of Our Lives or a Bill Bell show. That's why people respond to you the way they do -- because the kind of person you play is so damn rare.
Nancy Lee Grahn: Can I tell you something, though? That's a personal choice that the actor makes. I could easily be playing Alexis like a lackey, because that's sort of the way she was initially written. I could easily be letting Stefan lead her around by her nose. I have no interest in playing a woman without a backbone. I get bored. The audience gets bored. It serves no purpose.

Michael Logan: And the point would be?
Nancy Lee Grahn: Um... if there was a point....

Michael Logan: And the point would be?
Nancy Lee Grahn: I don't know. I can't offhand think of one. Maybe if the point was that there is no point to being a useless bimbo. Or that there are repercussions to being a useless bimbo.

Michael Logan: Would you play one if the paycheck was phenomenal?
Nancy Lee Grahn: No, even that would bug me. I don't want to play a part without consequence. Humor is also really important to me and you don't get to have any of that if you're not playing a smart role. I like language! I like to use big words that roll trippingly off the tongue! These dialogue writers on GH are bright people. And they prefer, I think, to write for someone who speaks more like they do. Maybe sometimes it doesn't seem this way, but there are still a lot of us working in daytime who resist stupidity with every fiber of our bodies.

Hunting Season star Ben Baur, along with his co creator Thandi Tolmay have created a hilarious new web series called #Adulting

The series follows two best friends Max (Baur) and Faye (Tolmay) as they navigate life and love, all while staring down the barrel of ‘30’. Cheating boyfriends, rapidly slowing metabolisms and empty bank accounts are only the beginning. Episode 1 was warmly received and in response to the demand for more episodes Co Creators Baur and Tolmay started a crowd funding campaign so that they can complete Season 1 and get it to the fans.
According to Baur, “We came up with the idea for #Adulting because we wanted to tell stories that were tragically relatable to this really odd time in life, when you’re supposed to be a grown-up and you’re just… not.” “We’ve be so fortunate to have an amazing crew donating their talents and time to help bring #Adulting to life. We want to be able to pay these fantastic individuals what they deserve and also be able to provide better services for them on set.”

The series has met its original $15,000 goal, but now we need to help get them to their stretch goal of $20,000. If they hit their goal of $20,000, they will be shooting a special #Adulting Holiday episode. The Holiday in the episode will be decided by the donors.

The campaign is over tonight at 10pm PST, so there isn't much time left!

You can watch the first two episodes of the series below. Endorse the show's Kickstarterhere to help the cast and crew reach their stretch goal.
